How to check a contractor's license
It takes about two minutes, it's free, and it's one of the simplest ways to protect yourself before work starts on your home.
Open the Arizona license search
This opens the Arizona Registrar of Contractors' own search page in a new tab, so you can keep these steps open here.
1. Get the license number
Ask the contractor for their Arizona license number. It's 6 digits. If you don't have it, you can search by their name instead.
2. Type it into the search
- By number: type the 6 digits in the license box.
- By name: type the first name, then the last name, like "John Doe," not "Doe, John." You don't need commas or apostrophes.
- Then press Search. None of the boxes are required, so you can search with just one.
The search also has an Advanced Search button if you'd like to look by city or by the kind of work.
3. Make sure the license is current
The search shows whether the license is current, along with other details about it. The Registrar suggests checking that it's current on the day you sign the contract.

When is a license needed? In Arizona, a licensed contractor is generally required for jobs of $1,000 or more (labor and materials together) or jobs that need a building permit. Someone without a license has to say "not a licensed contractor" in their ads. My hiring guide has more.
